The 2026/2027 Seasonal Rainfall Forecast has projected normal to above-normal rainfall across most parts of the country between October and December 2026 and January and March 2027. However, some northern areas may experience normal to below-normal rainfall early in the season, while Mchinji, Dowa, Kasungu and Lilongwe could record normal to below-normal rainfall later. Speaking while releasing the forecast in Lilongwe today, Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change Patricia Wiskes, said the forecast should help farmers decide when to plant and which crops to grow, while enabling sectors to strengthen preparedness. Wiskes acknowledged gaps in getting climate information to communities in time, saying government is working to ensure forecasts reach the grassroots before disasters occur, as resilience depends on preparedness rather than response. UK Deputy British High Commissioner Ben Nicholson said the UK is supporting Malawi to translate forecasts into early action, including promoting drought-resistant crops, monitoring markets and exploring disaster-risk financing, with more than US$3 million committed this year.
